Are You Too Young To Remember?
Have you ever said, 'I'll never raise my children the way my parents raised me?' or
'When I have children I'm gonna let them be free spirits...not restrained like I was."?
Of course you have. We've all said it at one time or another. We've just forgotten. Until
that fateful day when the past rears it's ugly head, slaps you in the face and you say,
'My God, I've become my mother (or father, depending on the gender). You're not alone.
It's been going on for centuries. Just look at the previous century and everything will
start to fall into place for grandparents, parents and future parents.
- The way your children dress -
I don't care if everybody else is wearing (flappers, knickers, zoot suits, leather
jackets, Nehru jackets, tie-dyed tee shirts, righteous sandals, mini skirts, hot pants,
pedal pushers, tube tops, cut off tees, spandex, lycra, capris, baggies). No child of
mine is going to wear that.
- The way you're children talk -
I don't care if it is (twenty three skidoo, the cat's pajamas, the cat's meow, cool,
cat, hot, hip, hep, what's happening, right on, in, bitchin', gonesville, heavy, gross,
far out, out of sight, phat). Speak English so I can understand you.
- The way your children react to the world around them -
If you loved your country you wouldn't be against/protesting our involvement in (Spain,
Germany - WWI, Germany - WWII, Italy, Japan, Korea, Viet Nam, Serbia, Nicaruaga, Grenada,
Yugoslavia, Iran, Iraq). Where's your patriotism?
- The music your children listen to -
I can tell you right now that ten years from now no one will ever remember who (Al
Jolson, Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Buddy
Holly, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin,
Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Michael
Jackson, LL Cool J, Tupac Shakur, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears) is/are or any song
they ever did.
So the next time your child wants to dress, speak, think or express themselves in a
way you disagree with...Stop, think and ask yourself one simple question...Was I any
different than they are right now? If you answer no, let them express themselves.
Of course, if you answer yes...you're lying.
