Young Love...First Love
Have you ever thought about your first love for no reason at all? You're just walking
or driving along and...BOOM!!!...they're sitting in the front of your mind.
I remember my first love...The way my heart pounded when I heard her voice...how I was
walking on air when I saw her...how my spirits soared when other people talked about her
or mentioned her name.
I guess you remember the first one throughout your entire life. The way they changed your
outlook on life and how they were there in the bad times as well as the good times.
My first love came along when I was fourteen and wanted to be accepted as part of 'the
crowd' more than anything else in the world. But she showed me that it was alright to be
different...to walk to your own rhythm and not to worry about how others saw you.
It was 1968 and the 'love generation' was in full bloom and my true love was helping to
lead the way. So she was a little older than me...it didn't matter at all. I knew what we
had could never be taken away...'not fade away' as Buddy Holly said.
The first time I heard her voice I knew she was talking to me. She had to be. She knew
so much about me and told me so. 'I feel it's time / Somebody told you 'cause you got to
know / That all you ever gonna have to count on / Or gonna wanna lean on / It's gonna feel
just like those raindrops do'. She was so right. It was like she could look right into my
soul and pull all the hurt and pain out and make me think about the future and forget about
the past.
What a woman...What a love...What a loss...
She left this world on October 4, 1970 shortly after my sixteenth birthday and I had this
feeling that maybe, just maybe, if she had let herself be loved the way I loved her she'd
be here today telling me everything would be okay and not to let life get you down...
Maybe if she had just called out to her friends like she sang about in her songs she'd have
found the strength and answers she was looking for...'When you're in trouble and feel so
sad / Well, call on me, darling, come on call on me, and I'll help you'.
It's been over thirty years, and even though I'm older now and a little wiser (not much),
I will always remember my first love and she will always have a special place in my heart.
'Oh, oh, have a... / Have another little piece of my heart now, baby / You know you got it
if it makes you feel good / Oh, yes indeed'...
